Compare the available work

BMW TCM repair prices

These estimates distinguish initial diagnosis from repair and replacement. The exact controller, fault and access determine the final written quotation.

Work and quantityEstimated AED
Initial control-system diagnosisFault assessment and electrical checks; extended investigation separately agreed350–500
3 or 5 Series TCM repairRepairable controller, testing and applicable coding1,200–1,800
X5 or X6 TCM repairRepairable controller, testing and applicable coding1,500–2,200
M Series TCM repairRepairable unit and relevant programming; exact application checked1,800–2,800

If testing and coding are already included in the agreed repair, they are not added again as separate full services. The quote explains any diagnostic charge or credit. Comparing the same controller, supplied parts and installation work makes repair and replacement prices meaningful.

Choose the work the car needs

Repair, programming or replacement

A transmission warning does not identify which of these services will solve the problem. The assessment establishes the appropriate choice.

Repair the existing controller

Repair can be considered when a specific internal fault can be addressed reliably and the unit remains suitable for reuse. The condition of the board, connectors and relevant components matters. We explain what the proposed repair covers and what testing is possible before presenting it as an alternative to replacement.

Retaining the original controller can preserve a known compatible assembly. It does not eliminate the need for correct installation or any applicable software procedure. Extensive corrosion, physical damage or an unsuitable previous repair may change the recommendation.

Correct a software problem

Programming or coding may be appropriate when the hardware is serviceable and the findings support a software or configuration issue. Clearing a fault code is a different operation. We explain what will be changed and why it relates to the complaint.

A reset cannot repair a damaged circuit, worn clutch or hydraulic leak. The workshop checks the underlying condition before treating software work as the complete answer. Any required initialization or learning procedure follows the relevant vehicle and transmission requirements.

Fit a suitable replacement

Replacement is considered when the controller cannot be repaired satisfactorily or a suitable replacement provides the more practical outcome. Its hardware reference, application, supply condition and programming requirements must be identified before installation.

A new, remanufactured or previously used unit can involve different compatibility and support considerations. The quote states what is being supplied. A donor module is not assumed to be plug-and-play, and the job should not depend on guessing its suitability after purchase.

Check the circuit around it

Power, wiring and communication

A controller relies on its electrical supply, connections and information from other systems. A communication fault can originate outside the unit. Those surrounding checks help avoid replacing a serviceable TCM.

The investigation may include battery and charging condition, relevant power and ground circuits, connectors and network communication. The tests depend on the actual fault. Water ingress, damaged wiring or a poor connection requires attention in its own right, even if the controller also needs work.

The garage connects the reported behavior with the fault information rather than relying on one stored code. An intermittent warning after a voltage problem is different from a controller that repeatedly loses communication under stable conditions. We explain what the checks establish and any further investigation needed.

Bring the complaint to us

Warnings and shifting problems

You can describe what the BMW does without identifying the electronics yourself.

Transmission malfunction messages

Tell us when the message appears and whether the car still selects gears normally. A photo is helpful if you already have one, but it is optional. Stored faults, electrical conditions and the current behavior are considered together. A dashboard warning alone is not a reason to order a controller.

Delayed drive or harsh changes

Delayed engagement and a jolt between gears can involve electronics, pressure control, fluid condition or mechanical wear. We assess the likely cause before recommending TCM work. If the problem is broader, a transmission inspection helps establish which repair is appropriate.

Restricted gears or unreliable drive

Limited operation can be a protective response to several types of fault. If drive is unreliable, the car jolts severely, there is a significant leak or the vehicle instructs you to stop, pull over safely and arrange recovery. Repeatedly restarting or accelerating to force engagement can make the situation harder to assess.

Assess the controller itself

Testing and repair on the bench

Where removal and bench assessment are appropriate, the controller can be examined for the identified electronic fault. The unit design determines what can be opened, tested and repaired. We explain the available approach rather than promise that every board can be restored.

The relevant connections and components are inspected, and a repair is followed by the checks suitable for that unit. Random heating or repeating the same reset is not a substitute for identifying the problem. If the controller is beyond a satisfactory repair, the findings support the replacement recommendation.

Bench results are also considered alongside the car. A unit that operates in isolation may still be affected by a wiring or supply problem once installed. Conversely, damage inside the controller can remain even after an external fault is corrected. Both sides of the repair need attention to address the original complaint.

Understand what is being replaced

TCM, mechatronics or gearbox

These descriptions can refer to different levels of work. The quotation names the affected assembly and the components included.

Electronic control and hydraulic control

Depending on the transmission, its electronics may be separate or integrated with a larger assembly. A fault described as “mechatronics” can involve electronic or hydraulic components, so the term alone does not explain what needs replacing. We identify the actual findings and the available service parts.

If the fault involves a sleeve, seal, valve body or related hydraulic component, mechatronics repair may be more relevant than a controller-only service. Fluid and pan work are explained when access requires them. A controller repair allowance should not be mistaken for a complete assembly price.

Mechanical transmission work

Internal clutch wear and other mechanical faults are separate repair decisions. Likewise, a damaged torque converter is not repaired by coding the TCM. Similar driving symptoms can lead to different repairs after diagnosis.

We explain when electronics are the main finding and when a wider gearbox assessment is needed. If you already have a replacement recommendation from elsewhere, bring it along if convenient. It can help the conversation, but the garage still checks the vehicle before agreeing the job.

Software matched to the hardware

Coding and final setup

The software work depends on the transmission and the controller being repaired or installed. A suitable electrical supply and the correct vehicle procedure help make the process controlled. We establish compatibility before fitting a replacement.

Where required, the controller is programmed, configured or initialized for the vehicle, followed by the applicable checks. These operations are distinct from a routine code clear. We do not promise that one universal reset or a short drive will make every incompatible used module work.

Existing modifications and previous programming can be relevant to the assessment. Tell us about them if you know, but you do not need to gather software versions before contacting the garage. The workshop identifies any further information needed and explains the planned work in the quotation.

Plan the repair and collection

A clear workshop visit

The exact transmission, parts availability and findings determine the work and timing.

Details needed for the repair

The 3 Series, 5 Series and X models span many transmissions and controller arrangements. Performance and hybrid applications also need the correct identification. Model and year are enough to begin the enquiry; further vehicle details are obtained when they help match a part or interpret a fault.

Your written quotation identifies the proposed repair or replacement and any software work. If extended testing or removal uncovers a different problem, the workshop explains the change before additional work proceeds. You can then compare the revised options on a clear basis.

Checks before handover

After the agreed work, the relevant communication, fault information and operation are checked. Where the car can be driven safely, a suitable road assessment considers engagement and shifting under conditions relevant to your complaint. A repair should be evaluated in the vehicle, not only on a bench.

At collection, the record identifies the repaired or supplied controller, completed programming and applicable warranty terms. Any separate findings are explained. Timing is discussed once the tests and parts requirements are known, rather than promising the same turnaround for a software correction and a replacement that must be ordered.

Your questions answered

Practical answers about the repair, the price and arranging a workshop visit.

Is TCM the same as EGS?

TCM is a general name for a transmission control module. BMW documentation may refer to its electronic transmission control as EGS. The exact hardware and its relationship to the mechatronics assembly depend on the transmission, so the workshop identifies the unit fitted to your vehicle.

Can a TCM fault be repaired?

Some electronic faults can be repaired when the controller remains suitable for reliable use. Other faults require software work, an external electrical repair or a replacement unit. Testing determines the appropriate recommendation; a warning message alone does not establish that the board has failed.

Will a reset fix harsh shifting?

It can only help when the findings and procedure support that action. A reset does not repair worn mechanical parts, hydraulic faults or damaged electronics. Repeatedly clearing the warning without investigating why it returns can leave the original problem unresolved.

Can a used controller be installed?

A used unit needs careful compatibility checks and an assessment of the applicable programming requirements. It is not automatically ready to use because it came from the same model. The garage explains whether the proposed unit is suitable before agreeing installation.

Is coding included in the repair price?

The listed repair estimates include applicable controller setup for the agreed job. Your quote names the actual work. Complete assembly replacement, extra hydraulic repairs, fluid/pan service and extensive access are separate when needed. Included coding is not charged again as a standalone programming service.

How do I arrange a TCM inspection?

Call or WhatsApp with your BMW model and what you have noticed. We arrange the assessment and obtain additional details where necessary. A warning photo or earlier report is useful if available, but neither is required to start the booking.
