Oil-leak repair estimates

A small seal can involve substantial access work, so the location of the leak matters more than the size of the stain. These planning ranges cover the stated repair on suitable applications; they are not a fixed price for every BMW engine.

Repair and applicationEstimated fitted totalIncluded scope
Valve-cover gasket
Selected four- and six-cylinder engines with a serviceable cover.
AED 900–1,600Gasket, fitting, joint preparation and leak checks. A replacement cover and separate ignition repairs are excluded.
Oil-filter housing reseal
Selected X3 applications with a reusable housing.
AED 700–1,000Gasket and fitting, with the required related seals or coolant work identified in the quote. A complete housing replacement is excluded.
Oil-pan gasket replacement
Selected 3 Series applications.
AED 1,900–3,400Gasket, access and fitting labor, engine oil and filter, and leak testing. A damaged pan or additional repair is separate.
Crankshaft seal or complex leakQuote after assessmentFront and rear seals have different access requirements. The proposal identifies the seal, dismantling and associated work.

The numerical estimates include parts, fitting and 5% VAT for the stated scope. The final price depends on the exact engine, access, parts and findings. Agree any separate diagnostic allowance before testing; additional repairs and collection or recovery are not included unless listed.

Find where the oil escapes

Oil can travel along the engine, a bracket or the undertray before it drips. The lowest wet point can therefore be some distance from the failing seal. Replacing a part simply because oil is visible beside it can leave the real leak unresolved.

We begin with the reported concern and an inspection of the accessible areas. Removing covers or an undertray may be needed to see the relevant joints. Recent oil changes and repairs matter because spilled oil, a disturbed seal or a damaged service fitting can leave similar marks.

If residue obscures the source, the affected area can be cleaned and checked again under appropriate operating conditions. A compatible tracer dye may help with a slow or concealed leak when the initial checks are inconclusive. It is a diagnostic option, not a necessary addition to every engine.

The findings should identify the component, the repair proposed and any further testing needed. If more than one area is leaking, we explain which repairs are separate and which share access. An engine scan can help investigate a related warning, but it does not physically locate every external oil leak.

Identifying the fluid matters too. An oily mark beneath the car may come from the engine, transmission or another lubricated assembly. We compare its source with the relevant levels and component condition. Color alone is not enough to call it an engine oil leak, particularly when fluid has mixed with dust or collected on an undertray.

Gasket, seal or complete component

A replacement gasket is appropriate when the joint and surrounding component can be restored correctly. Where the component itself has failed, resealing it alone may not provide the required repair.

Valve cover and gasket

The gasket seals the joint around the cover at the top of the engine. Oil near that area can require a gasket repair, but the cover itself must also be checked. A cracked, distorted or otherwise unserviceable cover is a different purchase from a gasket alone. On some designs, associated ventilation components can also affect the repair.

Oil pan and sump gasket

An oil-pan repair begins by confirming that the oil originates at the pan or its sealing joint. Access varies with the engine and driveline arrangement, and removing surrounding parts can account for much of the labor. Pan damage, drain-thread damage and a failed gasket need different solutions.

Crankshaft seals

Front and rear crankshaft seals are different repairs. A rear seal can require substantial access work, while a front leak may involve other components around the engine drive. The workshop confirms the location before pricing removal and refitting.

Housing and related oil seals

An oil-filter housing, oil-cooler joint or another sealing connection can be the source. Resealing a sound assembly is different from replacing a cracked housing. For an identified X3 housing leak, the model-specific service explains that narrower repair scope.

A leak after an oil change

Parts illustration. Filter seals and drain hardware must match the fitted system.

A new stain after service deserves a check of the filter and drain areas, as well as any older leakage. It could be residual spilled oil, a seal that has not seated correctly, a damaged cap or a drain fitting problem. Timing alone does not establish the cause.

Filter elements, sealing rings and drain hardware vary by engine. The correct part must be fitted in the correct position, with the required tightening procedure. Adding sealant or tightening a damaged fitting harder is not a substitute for repairing it.

If the diagnosis is an engine oil-service issue, the quote should distinguish correcting the leak from a complete oil and filter change. Some repairs require fresh oil or a filter; others do not. We identify those inclusions before combining the jobs.

Dark oil alone is not a reason to prescribe an engine flush. Any cleaning, refill or additional service needs a reason based on the repair and the vehicle’s condition.

What the repair should include

Correct parts and joint preparation

The selected gasket or seal must match the engine and component. Genuine BMW parts and suitable alternatives should be compared by their actual application, specification and warranty terms. A generic claim that all “OEM” parts are better or worse does not identify what will be fitted.

The repair includes preparing the mating surfaces and following the relevant installation procedure. Where a component is damaged or additional hardware is required, those items should appear in the proposal. No seal can compensate for every defect in the surrounding assembly.

Where the findings suggest a ventilation problem or abnormal crankcase pressure, that concern should be investigated alongside the leaking joint. Replacing a gasket without addressing a contributing fault can leave the repair incomplete. The additional checks should be explained for your engine rather than added automatically to every gasket replacement.

Related contamination and damage

Oil reaching nearby components may call for additional inspection. The findings determine whether cleaning, testing or replacement is needed. The presence of oil does not automatically justify replacing every nearby coil, belt, hose or electrical part.

Describe a burning smell, visible smoke or a change in engine operation when booking. Active smoke, rapidly falling oil level or an oil-pressure warning can make driving inappropriate; arrange assistance for those conditions.

Refill, recheck and handover

Any fluids disturbed during the repair are handled according to the agreed scope and relevant procedure. We check the repaired area for fresh leakage and review the original complaint under suitable conditions. For a slow leak, a further observation period may be part of confirming the result.

When two leaks share removal work, the quote should identify the combined access allowance. Separate faults can still need separate parts and checks, but the same oil refill or component removal should not be charged twice without a clear reason. This is useful when comparing one combined visit with two separate repair proposals.

Your repair summary should identify what was replaced, the oil or other materials included and any remaining recommendations. A clean engine bay immediately after washing is not, by itself, evidence that a slow leak has stopped.

Three example repair quotations

These illustrations show how the scope changes the total. They are planning examples, not records of completed customer jobs. Each total includes parts, fitting and 5% VAT for the stated work; a different engine or finding can change the quote.

535i valve-cover gasket

AED 1,155

A gasket-only repair where the existing cover remains serviceable. The example allows AED 1,100 for the gasket, fitting, preparation and leak checks, plus AED 55 VAT.

A new cover, separate ventilation repair, spark plugs and coils are excluded. Those items are added only when the findings support them.

X3 filter-housing reseal

AED 945

An accessible housing reseal using the required gasket and related seals, with the relevant coolant work included. The example is AED 900 before VAT, plus AED 45 VAT.

The housing is assumed to be reusable. A damaged assembly or oil-related damage elsewhere would require a revised proposal.

3 Series oil-pan gasket

AED 2,520

A gasket replacement with access labor, engine oil, filter and leak testing. The example allows AED 2,400 for that scope, plus AED 120 VAT.

The pan is assumed to be serviceable. Additional access requirements, a damaged pan or other repairs are priced separately.

Timing and repeat leak checks

Access changes the workshop time

An accessible sealing repair can be much shorter than removing an oil pan or reaching a rear crankshaft seal. Parts availability, the condition of fasteners and the need to investigate more than one leak also affect the schedule.

We explain the expected work and timing after assessing the vehicle. A possible same-day repair is not a guaranteed appointment or completion promise for every model. You can ask about the likely turnaround when arranging the inspection.

If oil appears again

Tell the workshop where and when you noticed it, and whether the oil level or smell has changed. Remaining residue and a fresh leak need to be distinguished through inspection. Do not assume every new mark comes from the joint that was just repaired.

Keep the repair details available so a follow-up check can focus on the previous findings and completed work. Any applicable parts or workmanship coverage should be described for the actual repair, with its conditions made clear.

Feedback from BMW owners

“I took my 535i to two other shops. They kept topping up oil without solving the leak. These guys opened the engine, found the faulty valve cover gasket, and fixed it in one day. No more oil stains in my garage.”

Khalid R., Downtown Dubai

“The leak was small but constant. They diagnosed it with UV dye and traced it to the oil filter housing. I had no idea it could cause that much damage. Highly recommend them for proper BMW oil leak repair.”

Anita M., Jumeirah Lake Towers

“Straightforward and honest. Showed me photos of the cracked gasket, explained everything, gave a fair quote, and used original parts. My M3 runs clean again.”

Mark D., Dubai Hills

Oil-leak repair questions

Can I drive with a small oil leak?

The safe next step depends on the leak, oil level, warning and any smoke. Do not drive with an oil-pressure warning, rapid oil loss, active smoke or an instruction to stop the engine. Contact the workshop to discuss assistance when driving may be unsafe.

Does every leak need an oil change?

No. It depends on the repair and the condition of the oil. Oil-pan work normally involves draining the oil, while some other external sealing jobs do not require a full oil service. Your quotation should identify the refill and filter requirements.

Can you replace only the gasket?

Yes, when the gasket is the confirmed cause and the surrounding component remains suitable for reuse. A cracked cover, damaged housing or another defect can require a complete component instead.

Why does a small oil-pan leak cost more to repair?

Access can involve substantial removal and refitting work. The gasket itself is only part of the job, and the engine, driveline arrangement, oil and filter requirements affect the total.

Can a scan identify the exact oil leak?

A scan can help investigate related warnings and engine behavior, but external leakage normally needs physical inspection. Cleaning and a suitable tracer dye can help where the source remains difficult to see.
