Start with what changed

Which symptoms need a VANOS check?

VANOS changes camshaft timing to suit engine conditions. A fault can affect response and idle quality, but ignition, air leaks, oil supply, sensors, and mechanical timing can produce similar complaints.

At idle

Shaking or uneven running

Tell us whether it happens cold, warm, or after a recent oil service. Misfire and air-leak checks may be needed alongside VANOS testing.

On acceleration

Hesitation or reduced power

Share the warning message and conditions when power drops. Reduced power alone does not identify a failed solenoid.

After a code is cleared

The timing fault returns

Send the complete fault report if you have it. The affected camshaft, engine version, and test results matter more than the code label alone.

Choose by the work needed

BMW VANOS repair prices in Dubai

These planning ranges separate testing, accessible solenoid work, serviceable older VANOS units, and more involved adjuster replacement. They are not one universal package.

Find the cause

Targeted VANOS diagnosis

Fault review, relevant live data, and agreed electrical or oil-control checks. Additional mechanical pressure testing or disassembly is quoted if needed.

AED 250–450
Oil-control component

One accessible solenoid

A compatible replacement, required local seal, normal removal/refitting, and a response check. Extended diagnosis and oil service are separate.

AED 650–1,400
Serviceable older units

VANOS seal repair

Removal, an appropriate seal kit, reassembly, and checks on selected repairable designs. Worn housings or damaged internal parts change the recommendation.

AED 1,800–3,500
Mechanical timing component

Camshaft adjuster replacement

Selected single-adjuster jobs with required access, seals, fasteners, and timing setup. Multi-bank engines, M systems, or wider timing damage need individual quotes.

AED 3,000–6,500

Budget for diagnosis and the repair together

Using the published AED 250–450 diagnostic allowance, selected single-solenoid visits total AED 900–1,850, seal repairs AED 2,050–3,950, and adjuster replacements AED 3,250–6,950, all before VAT and additional work. These are planning totals, not fixed offers. Extended fault tracing, oil service, damaged wiring, and separately approved mechanical repairs can increase the bill.

All ranges exclude VAT. Budget initial diagnosis separately unless included or credited in your quote. The final price identifies the parts brand, fitting work, applicable service functions, tax, and exclusions. A pair of solenoids, a complete assembly, and timing-chain work are separate quotations.

The initial inspection is free; targeted VANOS diagnosis is a separate AED 250–450 estimate. Confirm the free inspection scope before booking. Paid testing starts only after approval, and any diagnostic credit is confirmed in your written quote.

Choose the VANOS work your BMW needs

Correct oil or wiring problems

If testing finds an oil-supply, connector, or wiring problem, that fault is quoted first. Replacing a solenoid will not automatically correct the underlying cause.

Replace one solenoid

Choose a matched component when its failure is confirmed. The estimate identifies which unit is replaced, its local seal, normal fitting, and the response check.

Repair a serviceable unit

A suitable seal repair retains a reusable assembly. Compare the kit, access gaskets, fitting labor, and any remaining wear before approving this option.

Replace a damaged adjuster

Mechanical damage may require an adjuster or assembly. Compare timing setup, required fasteners, associated seals, and access labor as part of the complete fitted cost.

01 · Control the oil flow

When solenoid work is enough

The oil-control solenoid helps regulate oil flow for camshaft adjustment on applicable engines. If testing identifies a faulty solenoid and the rest of the system is working correctly, replacing that component may resolve the complaint without opening the timing drive.

  • Confirm the affected component. Check the connector, wiring, control response, and relevant oil condition before ordering parts.
  • Clean only when appropriate. Deposits may justify inspection and cleaning on a suitable design. Cleaning cannot repair an electrical failure or worn mechanical assembly.
  • Retest the response. Check the original symptom and relevant timing data after the repair. Clearing a code alone is not a completion test.

Both solenoids are not automatically replaced together. A second replacement needs its own reason or an agreed preventive-maintenance choice.

02 · Restore the adjustment mechanism

When the VANOS unit needs mechanical repair

Some older designs can be serviced with an appropriate seal repair. Other faults require an adjuster or assembly replacement. A seal kit is not a universal solution for every BMW engine.

Repair a suitable existing unit

Consider this when the design is serviceable and inspection supports reuse. Your quote identifies the seals or repair parts, associated gaskets, and any wear that remains outside the repair.

Replace a damaged adjuster

Consider this when wear, damage, or a nonserviceable assembly prevents a dependable repair. Required locking tools, engine-specific timing setup, seals, and single-use fasteners must be included where applicable.

VANOS work does not automatically mean a new chain. If inspection identifies a separate chain, guide, or tensioner problem, review the BMW timing-chain replacement recommendation and its additional cost.

Before parts are approved

What we check during VANOS diagnosis

The aim is to separate a control fault from an oil-supply or mechanical problem. The exact test sequence follows the engine and symptoms, rather than replacing parts in a fixed order.

  1. Read the fault in context

Review stored faults, available operating information, and the repair history. Note whether the complaint began after oil service, engine work, or a previous solenoid replacement.

  2. Check oil and electrical basics

Assess oil level, specification, service history, and relevant connectors and wiring. Check filter fitment or oil pressure where the engine and findings justify it.

  3. Compare commanded and actual timing

Use applicable diagnostic functions to assess camshaft response. An abnormal result guides further checks; it does not by itself identify which part must be replaced.

  4. Investigate mechanical timing if indicated

Persistent correlation faults, abnormal noise, or a response problem that survives control checks can justify further inspection. We explain the proposed disassembly and cost first.

VANOS and Valvetronic are different systems

VANOS changes camshaft timing. Valvetronic changes intake-valve lift on equipped engines. Similar driveability symptoms can involve either, but a VANOS fault does not automatically justify Valvetronic motor replacement.

Your engine determines the repair

Why the BMW model and year matter

A 3 Series badge does not identify one VANOS design. Different generations use different components, access procedures, and repair options. Start with your model and year. We can request the VIN or engine details later to confirm the correct parts.

Single VANOS adjusts one camshaft; double VANOS adjusts intake and exhaust timing. That distinction does not mean every double-VANOS engine uses the same solenoids, seals, or adjusters.

Older serviceable assemblies

Selected engines, including M54 applications, may have a viable seal-repair option after inspection. The condition of the unit determines whether a rebuild is sensible.

Later engine families

N52, N54, N55, N20, B48, and B58 applications need engine-specific diagnosis and parts matching. Do not assume a procedure or component from another generation fits yours.

M and multi-bank engines

Specialized systems can involve different hardware and substantially different labor. A standard single-solenoid estimate should not be treated as a complete M-engine repair price.

BMW VANOS repair FAQs

Does the fitted price include diagnosis and VAT?

Published repair ranges exclude VAT and initial paid diagnosis. Targeted diagnosis is estimated at AED 250–450 unless included or credited in your written quote. The final quote identifies testing, parts, fitting, applicable service functions, extras, and the total payable.

What warranty comes with VANOS repair?

Warranty terms depend on the chosen parts and repair. Confirm parts and workmanship coverage, duration, mileage conditions, exclusions, and the claim process in writing before approval. Seal repair and component replacement may have different terms.

Can you collect a BMW that stalls or cannot be driven?

Share your location and vehicle condition. Routine Dubai pickup and drop-off may differ from recovery of a non-running car. Confirm arrangements and charges before dispatch. Stop driving if there is an oil-pressure warning, loud mechanical noise, or stalling.

What information do I need to book?

Send your model, year, and symptoms, plus your location if collection is needed. You do not need a VIN or fault report to start an inquiry. Previous reports, mileage, and engine details can be supplied later if useful.

How much does BMW VANOS repair cost in Dubai?

Selected single-solenoid replacements are estimated at AED 650–1,400 + VAT fitted. Seal repair on a suitable older unit is around AED 1,800–3,500 + VAT, while selected camshaft-adjuster jobs are AED 3,000–6,500 + VAT. Diagnosis, engine version, parts, and access determine the final quote.

How long does VANOS repair take?

An accessible solenoid job may be completed within a workshop visit once diagnosis and parts availability are confirmed. Seal repair or adjuster replacement can require one or more working days. We confirm timing after identifying the engine and required work.

Can an oil change fix a VANOS fault?

Correcting low oil, unsuitable oil, or a filter-related issue may resolve an oil-control problem when that is the cause. An oil change cannot repair a failed electrical solenoid, worn adjuster, or damaged timing components. Check the cause before choosing a repair.

Do codes such as 2A82 or 2A87 mean the solenoids must be replaced?

Those codes can relate to VANOS operation on applicable engines, but they are not a parts order. The full fault description, engine version, oil supply, electrical checks, and camshaft response help determine the cause. A recurring code after replacement needs further diagnosis.

Does VANOS repair include timing-chain replacement?

Usually it is a separate decision. Solenoid replacement may not require opening the timing drive. Mechanical VANOS work may involve timing setup, but a full chain kit is included only when the findings justify it and the quote states it.

Does a new VANOS solenoid need coding?

A like-for-like solenoid replacement does not normally require programming a new identity into the vehicle. Engine-specific test plans may call for adaptation procedures or other service functions. These should follow the applicable repair instructions, not a blanket reset rule.
