A new compatible unit
A new converter is an option where the correct part is available. The quotation identifies the manufacturer or genuine BMW supply route and the reference intended for your transmission. Two converters can look similar while differing in their application, so external appearance alone is not enough to approve a replacement.
We compare availability, the supplied unit and fitting requirements before ordering. A higher purchase price does not remove the need to inspect the surrounding transmission. A damaged pump, contaminated oil circuit or another unresolved fault can affect the replacement, regardless of whose name appears on the box.
A remanufactured option
A properly specified remanufactured unit can be considered when a suitable supplier and application are available. It should be distinguished from a used converter with an unknown history. Ask what the supplied unit includes, the testing provided and whether returning the old converter is part of the exchange arrangement.
Any exchange charge and its return conditions belong in the quotation. Repairing the original unit also depends on whether its condition and the available specialist service make that practical. We explain the available choices for your BMW without promising that every damaged converter can be rebuilt or that every replacement is in stock.

Find the reason for shudder
A torque converter transfers engine power into a conventional automatic transmission, and its lock-up clutch can influence how the car feels at a steady speed. Shudder is a reason to investigate, not proof that the converter needs replacing.
The assessment combines your description with fault information and the relevant operating data. We consider when the vibration occurs, the selected gear, temperature and load. Engine running faults, mounts, driveline movement, fluid condition and transmission control problems can produce overlapping symptoms.
If the findings point to electronic control rather than the converter, TCM diagnosis and repair may be the appropriate next step. A wider transmission assessment is useful when several faults are present. Your quote should follow the identified problem rather than the most expensive possible explanation.

Shudder, slipping or delayed drive
The model and a short description are enough to arrange the first check. You do not need to identify the transmission code or failed component yourself.
Vibration at a steady speed
Describe whether the sensation appears under light acceleration, while cruising or as the car slows. A repeatable pattern helps the workshop assess converter clutch operation alongside other possible causes. We avoid treating one road speed as a universal test for every BMW or asking you to reproduce a severe fault on the road.
Revs rise without normal acceleration
Unexpected slipping can involve fluid supply, hydraulic control, internal clutches or converter-related faults. The check establishes what can be learned before dismantling and what remains uncertain. A converter replacement alone will not restore worn internal transmission components, so any wider recommendation needs its own explanation.
Delayed engagement or warning messages
A delay when selecting drive or reverse needs investigation, particularly when accompanied by harsh engagement, overheating or a warning. A leaking connector sleeve and a worn converter are different findings. Where the relevant fault is identified, mechatronics repair is considered separately instead of being automatically bundled into converter replacement.
If drive is unreliable, there is severe slipping, a burning smell, a significant fluid leak or an instruction to stop, pull over safely and arrange recovery. Avoid repeated acceleration to force the car to move. The garage can discuss the next step, but a message alone cannot establish that the transmission is safe to drive.
Careful access and installation
Replacing the converter properly
The work normally requires separating the transmission from the engine. Access depends on the fitted drivetrain, underbody components and transmission design. The quotation allows for the actual car rather than promising identical labor for every sedan, SUV and performance model.
The assembly is supported appropriately while the relevant connections and mounting components are released. During removal, the workshop checks accessible mating surfaces, seals and associated parts. A new converter does not justify replacing every mount or surrounding component; additional work is explained when wear or damage supports it.
Correct converter engagement and installation clearances matter. The unit is fitted using the procedure appropriate to that transmission, with the relevant fasteners and seals addressed. We do not use the mounting bolts to force an incorrectly seated assembly together. Final connections and fluid requirements are checked before operation.

Fluid, filter and contamination
Fluid condition helps determine what else the repair needs. A converter problem may leave debris in the transmission or connected oil circuit. The workshop assesses the contamination and the suitable cleaning or replacement work before presenting a converter-only repair as sufficient.
The correct fluid specification and filling procedure depend on the transmission. Filter or pan arrangements also differ. The quote identifies what is being renewed, while the filling and level check follow the relevant procedure. A generic top-up quantity or a universal fluid is not a useful substitute for matching the gearbox.
A fluid service can be worthwhile when inspection supports it, but it cannot restore a physically damaged converter or worn transmission internals. Additives and repeated resets should not be presented as a guaranteed repair. If debris or damage suggests a wider problem, we explain the findings and the revised options before additional work proceeds.

Fluid level and operation
After assembly, the relevant fluid level, leaks and connections are checked. Fault information and operating behavior are reviewed as appropriate. Any software procedure, adaptation or relearn is selected for the transmission and repair, rather than applying the same reset to every vehicle.
Mechanical converter replacement does not automatically require replacing or reprogramming the transmission controller. If additional software work is recommended, the workshop should explain why it is relevant. The quotation separates that work from the converter and normal fitting checks.
A suitable road assessment
Where the car can be driven safely, the finished repair is assessed under conditions relevant to the original complaint. The workshop checks engagement, power delivery and any remaining vibration or warnings. A successful replacement addresses the identified fault; it does not guarantee that every unrelated noise or driveline issue will disappear.

Sedans and coupes
Different generations of the 3, 5 and 7 Series use different transmissions. Even within one model range, the engine, market and production specification may change the required converter. We obtain the vehicle details needed for parts matching after you contact us. A previous inspection report can help, but it is optional.
A price for a manual clutch or a dual-clutch transmission repair should not be compared directly with a conventional automatic converter replacement. The workshop identifies the fitted system before selecting the relevant repair and estimate.
X models and performance cars
xDrive components and underbody access can affect removal and refitting time. Performance and electrified variants also need the correct assessment for their fitted transmission. A model badge alone does not establish that the car uses the converter illustrated on this page.

Will replacing the converter cure every shudder?
No. Converter clutch problems are one possible cause, alongside engine running, fluid, transmission and driveline faults. The assessment identifies what supports the recommendation. If the converter is damaged, replacement addresses that finding; unrelated faults need their own repair.
What is the complete replacement price?
The complete quotation combines the correctly matched converter with removal and refitting, suitable fluid, required service parts and final checks. The figures above show service components only. The converter supply price depends on the application and available replacement, and the written quote states VAT and the payable total.
Can you fit a converter I already bought?
The garage can assess an owner-supplied part for compatibility and condition before agreeing installation. Bring its reference and supplier details if available. Fitting terms and responsibility for the supplied unit are explained separately; a matching appearance alone is not enough.
Is a transmission rebuild always necessary?
No. Converter replacement may be appropriate when the remaining transmission is serviceable. If inspection finds wider wear or contamination, additional work may be needed. We explain why a larger repair is recommended instead of treating it as an automatic package.
How long will the repair take?
Timing depends on diagnosis, parts availability, drivetrain access and any additional damage. We discuss the expected completion once the unit and fitting requirements are known. A booked inspection is not a promise that every converter replacement can be completed the same day.
