Fluid beneath the front of the car
On hydraulic systems, we trace the leak to the rack, hoses, pump, or reservoir. Fluid collected inside a rack boot needs investigation.
Leaks · Loose steering · Rack replacement
Heavy steering, a persistent knock, or fluid around the rack? BMW Garage checks the cause before quoting repair or replacement. Get clear options for your BMW’s steering system at our Al Quoz 4 workshop.
Start with your BMW model, year, and steering symptom. We can request the VIN when checking parts.

Start with what you feel
These symptoms justify inspection, but none confirms a failed rack on its own. Tell us when the problem occurs and whether it started after an impact or recent repair.
On hydraulic systems, we trace the leak to the rack, hoses, pump, or reservoir. Fluid collected inside a rack boot needs investigation.
Inner and outer tie rods, rack mounts, column joints, and suspension parts can create similar movement or noise.
Mechanical binding, hydraulic pressure, tire condition, alignment, and electric assistance are checked as applicable.
We look for worn or damaged components before recommending another adjustment or a replacement rack.
Identify the system before selecting parts
We assess hydraulic and electric rack assemblies. Repair availability depends on the exact unit, confirmed damage, and a suitable repair procedure. A model badge alone is not enough to order the part.
Leak tracing, pressure checks, resealing, mechanical assessment, and replacement where needed. Pump and hose faults are separated from rack failure.
Mechanical rack condition and replacement fitment are covered here. For lost electric assistance, motor, sensor, wiring, or control faults, see BMW electric steering rack repair.
Variable-assist or active-steering equipment can change parts and setup requirements. Compatibility is checked by VIN and equipment specification.
An electric rack has no hydraulic power-steering fluid to flush. Rear-wheel steering is a separate system and is not automatically included in a front-rack quotation.
Compare the complete job
Use these published repair estimates to compare options. They are not confirmed all-inclusive prices. Before approving work, get one itemized fitted total covering the rack or repair parts, removal and refitting, hydraulic fluid where applicable, alignment, required electronic setup, and VAT.
For a repairable rack with a confirmed seal leak and sound working surfaces. A seal kit cannot correct deep corrosion or damaged metal.
For selected units needing more extensive, serviceable internal work. The dismantling findings determine what can be repaired.
An entry planning figure for selected applications, not a fitted-price promise for every BMW. New genuine, active-steering, EPS, and M units may cost substantially more.

What the inspection should establish
Where is the leak or movement? We distinguish rack-body leakage and internal wear from a hose, tie rod, mount, or column joint.
Is the rack mechanically sound?Visible damage, corrosion, binding, mounting condition, and excessive movement guide the next step.
Is assistance working correctly?Fluid condition, hoses, and pump pressure help distinguish a hydraulic supply problem from a rack fault. Electronic scans and supply checks apply where fitted.
Does removal need approval? We ask for approval before removal or paid dismantling. The standard AED 350 diagnostic fee is waived when the diagnosed repair is booked with us; additional testing and dismantling charges are agreed separately.
Keep a sound rack. Replace an unsuitable one.
The useful comparison is the complete fitted cost and expected repair quality, not the cheapest part listing.
Agree exactly what is renewed and how operation will be checked. An intact boot protects against dirt and moisture. Replacing a torn boot does not repair a leaking internal hydraulic seal.
Compare a genuine new assembly with a compatible, documented remanufactured option where available. Confirm the supplier, included components, and written warranty.
A resealed rack, a properly remanufactured unit, and a used assembly are different products. Ask what was inspected, renewed, and tested, whether a core return is required, and which warranty covers parts and labor. Availability must be confirmed.
The parts quote is only the beginning
For a 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5, or M model, the replacement must match the VIN and fitted steering equipment. Imported cars and active-steering variants need particular attention. We check compatibility before ordering.
BMW wheel alignment adjusts geometry. It cannot remove mechanical play or restore failed assistance.

Three typical job estimates
Three typical scenarios show what changes the repair decision. These are illustrative estimates, not completed customer jobs or fitted-price offers. The listed ranges cover the published repair category; labor inclusions, additional parts, and VAT still need confirmation.
Scenario: Fluid is traced to a hydraulic rack seal, with acceptable shaft and housing surfaces.
Proposed work: Renew the applicable seals and check operation and leakage.
Quote checklist: Removal and refitting, specified fluid, alignment, and VAT.
What changes the choice: Corroded working surfaces may rule out resealing; a hose leak needs a different repair.
Scenario: Inspection identifies serviceable internal wear in a hydraulic rack.
Proposed work: Renew the agreed internal parts and seals, then test the assembly.
Quote checklist: Internal parts, dismantling, fitting, fluid, alignment, and VAT.
What changes the choice: Compare the complete overhaul quote with a compatible replacement before authorizing internal work.
Scenario: Impact damage or an unserviceable assembly rules out repair.
Proposed work: Source a compatible rack, identifying whether it is new or remanufactured.
Quote checklist: Unit condition and supplier, fitting, alignment, electronic setup if needed, VAT, and any core charge.
What changes the price: New genuine, EPS, and active-steering units can cost substantially more than this starting figure.

“The free pickup made all the difference. I couldn’t leave work. They collected my 5 Series from Downtown, serviced it, and had it back by 6pm the same day.”
After your steering rack repair
Keep the itemized invoice, written warranty, and alignment results where supplied. Follow the repair-specific instructions and arrange any requested follow-up.
Report a returning symptomContact the workshop about new leakage, knocking, warnings, or an off-center steering wheel. Sudden heavy or unpredictable steering means stopping safely.
Protect the repaired systemInclude visible boots, hoses, joints, and tire wear in routine inspections. Address damaged boots before dirt and moisture cause further problems.
Follow the correct fluid guidanceUse VIN-specific advice for hydraulic fluid and maintenance. There is no universal fluid interval for every BMW rack, and EPS systems do not use hydraulic power-steering fluid.
Before booking
Some hydraulic leaks and serviceable mechanical faults can be repaired when the main assembly is sound. Bent parts, severe corrosion, housing damage, or an unsupported internal repair can make replacement the better choice. Inspection determines which options can be quoted.
No. The boot is a dust cover, not the hydraulic pressure seal. Collected power-steering fluid can indicate an internal seal leak. The source must be confirmed, and the rack condition checked before choosing a repair.
Contact the workshop promptly. A hydraulic leak can reduce fluid level and assistance. Do not drive with heavy or unpredictable steering, a substantial leak, or a warning instructing you to stop. Topping up is not a repair, and the fluid specification must be correct.
Alignment changes wheel geometry. It does not repair worn tie rods, loose mounts, rack play, or damaged suspension joints. Those faults need to be identified and corrected before final alignment.
No single rule covers every BMW steering system. Hydraulic, EPS, and active-steering equipment have different procedures. Your quote should specify any required coding, initialization, steering-angle calibration, and alignment.
This page covers rack leakage, mechanical condition, repairability, and assembly replacement. Electric steering rack repair focuses on EPS assistance, electrical supply, sensors, motor and control faults. A car can need both mechanical and electronic checks.
The schedule depends on the fault, whether the rack can be repaired, and parts availability. Inspection comes first; removal, repair or unit sourcing, refitting, and final checks follow approval. Ask for the expected collection date when accepting your quote. Same-day completion is not guaranteed.
Start with your BMW model, year, and the symptom: fluid loss, knocking, looseness, or heavy steering. Mention any warning or recent impact. We can request the VIN to identify the correct parts. Photos support the first discussion, but an inspection is needed to confirm internal damage.
Published guides are AED 1,800–2,400 for a suitable hydraulic reseal, AED 2,500–3,200 for an overhaul, and replacement from AED 4,200 for selected applications. These are not confirmed fitted totals. Request an itemized quote showing labor, fluid, alignment, applicable setup, and VAT. The standard AED 350 diagnostic fee is waived when you book the diagnosed repair.
Not automatically. The wheel, tire, tie rods, suspension, mounting points, and subframe may also be affected. Inspection must locate the damage. Ask for any related work to be explained and quoted separately before the final alignment.
