A matching case is only the start
Keys can look alike and use different electronics. The replacement must match the vehicle’s security system and relevant market specification. We confirm the application using the vehicle details and key information, rather than relying on the model badge alone.
Tell us if you use Comfort Access, boot release or a Display Key. A basic remote can be a different proposition from a key with additional convenience functions. Ask which functions are supported and have that choice included in the quote.
A used or online key is not automatically reusable. Check suitability before spending money on it. Where more than one compatible option is available, compare the supplied part, functions, lead time and warranty terms together.

Choose a replacement around the features you use, not just the shape of the remote. A clear specification helps you avoid paying for functions your car does not support or losing a convenience feature you expected to keep.

Confirm remote locking, unlocking, the supported boot-release function and engine-start authorization. Identify whether the price covers the supplied remote, programming and an emergency blade. The key still needs to match the vehicle’s system even when you only want basic functions.
Comfort Access key
Convenience without pressing a button
Where the vehicle has compatible equipment, check the passive-entry and starting functions you want to retain. A remote that locks the doors by button may not provide the same convenience features. Ask the team to list the supported functions for your particular BMW before the key is ordered.
Display Key
Additional functions need individual checks
The display, charging arrangements and vehicle-supported functions need their own assessment. A damaged screen does not, by itself, establish that every part of the key has failed. Conversely, a replacement case or screen is not the same job as supplying and authorizing a complete key.
Phone-based access
A separate compatibility question
If you already use a supported digital-key feature, mention it when arranging physical-key work. Do not assume a phone is a universal substitute for a missing remote. Vehicle equipment, account setup and compatible devices affect the options, so this should be checked separately from a conventional fob quote.
Use the functions you actually rely on to compare quotations. Someone arranging a dependable spare may make a different choice from an owner replacing a damaged Display Key. There is little value in a cheaper remote if the missing convenience feature is the main reason you use that key.
A complete quotation should also identify the supplied part accurately. “Original style” describes appearance; it does not establish the manufacturer, electronics or compatibility. Ask which part is being supplied, whether it is new and what warranty applies to that option. If a seller has already provided a part number, share it before purchasing.
Bring your current key where available, including a damaged one. Its condition and identification can be useful even if it no longer operates. Explain what changed first: reduced range, a broken button, water exposure, a blank display or loss of start recognition. A weak remote does not always need a new key
Reduced locking range, intermittent buttons and a low-battery message can point to the key battery or the remote itself. We check the relevant battery design and the condition of the fob before recommending a replacement.
If one key works and the other does not, that comparison is useful. If both fail, the vehicle battery, receiver or another electrical issue may need attention. A start-authorization problem also needs to be separated from remote locking.

Check the functions you will use every day
The job is complete when the agreed functions work with the vehicle. The handover check depends on the key and equipment fitted to your BMW.
Access and remote functions
Confirm lock, unlock and boot release where fitted. Test the agreed passive-entry functions if the replacement supports your vehicle’s Comfort Access system.
Check the emergency blade and its intended use where supplied. Make sure the quote states whether blade cutting is included.
Starting and remaining keys
Check that the vehicle recognises the replacement and starts as expected. Bring remaining keys so their continued operation can be checked during handover.

Keep the spare securely; leaving both keys together does not give you a practical backup if that bag or set is lost.
If every key is missing
Call before arranging transport. Tell us whether the vehicle is accessible and where it is parked. The first conversation establishes the ownership checks, suitable key and workshop arrangements. Do not order a remote solely because a listing names your BMW model.

Compare the total before approving

Can you help if I have lost every key?

Does every replacement keep Comfort Access?
No. Remote locking, engine-start authorization and Comfort Access are separate compatibility checks. The quote should identify the functions supported by the replacement for your vehicle.
Should I change the key battery or replace the whole key?
If the remote range has dropped or the dashboard reports a low key battery, start with a check of the correct battery type and key condition. Some key designs differ, so do not assume every fob uses the same replaceable battery.
Can you program a key I bought elsewhere?
Ask before bringing or buying it. The part number, market specification, security system and previous use can affect compatibility. A remote that looks identical may still be unsuitable.
What should I bring to the appointment?
Bring identification, proof that you own or are authorized to use the vehicle, and all available keys. Confirm the required documents with the team when booking; you do not need to send identity documents to request an initial price guide.
Will replacing my key stop the missing key from working?
Ask about disabling the lost key’s electronic authorization where the vehicle supports it. Electronic deactivation does not change a physical lock or the mechanical blade, so the appropriate security advice depends on what was lost.
