Which starting problem matches your BMW?
The sound and engine response help plan the first checks. You do not need to diagnose the fault yourself.
No sound or one click
The engine does not turn.
Battery supply, cable condition and start authorization need checking alongside the starter.
Repeated clicks or a slow turn
Power drops or cranking is weak.
A weak battery or high resistance can resemble starter failure, even with working dashboard lights.
A whine or grinding noise
The starter may spin without turning the engine properly.
Stop repeated attempts. Engagement and the starter drive or ring gear need assessment.
The engine turns normally
It cranks but will not fire.
This needs a broader no-start investigation. A replacement starter is not the default solution.
Smoke, a burning smell or a starter that stays engaged? Stop trying to start the car and arrange assistance. Do not bridge terminals, strike the starter or work beneath an unsupported vehicle. If there is fire or immediate danger, move clear and contact emergency services.
Three possible repair routes
Starter motor repair or replacement?
01
Repair the supply fault
A damaged ground connection, cable or confirmed control-circuit fault may prevent cranking while the motor remains serviceable. We explain the supply repair and its cost before recommending a replacement motor.
02
Assess a repairable unit
A suitable starter may support specialist solenoid, brush or internal repair. Availability, condition and testing determine whether this is worthwhile. A repair is not automatically possible or cheaper once removal is included.
03
Replace the failed assembly
Fit a matched replacement when the starter is worn, damaged or unsuitable for economical repair. Include the correct mounting and electrical connections, any required fitting parts and restart checks.
A battery, wiring or authorization fault is separate from a failed starter motor. When the engine cranks normally but does not fire, our BMW no-start diagnosis service covers the wider investigation.
Plan the fitted cost
BMW starter replacement prices in Dubai
Selected conventional starter replacements are estimated at AED 1,250–2,450 for the part and fitting. Engine specification and access determine which range applies.
| Selected BMW application | Starter part AED | Fitting labor AED | Part + fitting AED | With AED 300 diagnosis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 320i F30 | 850–1,100 | 400–500 | 1,250–1,600 | 1,550–1,900 |
| 520i G30 | 950–1,200 | 450–550 | 1,400–1,750 | 1,700–2,050 |
| X5 F15 | 1,100–1,350 | 500–600 | 1,600–1,950 | 1,900–2,250 |
| 740Li G12 | 1,300–1,600 | 600–700 | 1,900–2,300 | 2,200–2,600 |
| M3 F80 | 1,350–1,700 | 600–750 | 1,950–2,450 | 2,250–2,750 |
Diagnosis: No-start diagnosis starts from AED 300. A free initial visual inspection is different from paid electrical testing. The final column adds the starting AED 300 diagnostic allowance to the part and fitting estimate. Extended fault tracing can cost more. Any diagnostic credit is confirmed individually before approval; it is not assumed in these figures.
These are planning estimates for selected fitments, not a quote for every vehicle with that badge. Subtotals include the starter and standard fitting labor, with routine installation checks. Additional access seals, damaged wiring, ring-gear repairs, recovery and extended diagnosis are excluded unless listed. These figures are not confirmed VAT-inclusive offers. Your written quote states VAT, the final payable amount and the selected part brand and condition. Model names alone do not confirm the engine or exact fitment.

A starting fault can disrupt the whole day. Get help arranging the visit, understanding the estimate and choosing the replacement before work begins.
Approval before parts
We explain the test findings and proposed repair. The quote separates diagnosis, the selected starter and fitting labor. Additional repairs need your approval, so a wiring or access problem does not become an unexplained charge.
Parts and warranty explained
Compare the available part options for your BMW. Ask for the manufacturer, new or remanufactured condition, applicable parts and labor coverage, and any exchange-core requirement together in the written quote.
Help getting to the workshop
Free initial workshop inspection and suitable scheduled Dubai pickup and drop-off are available. Electrical diagnosis and specialist recovery are separate services. Share your location and starting problem so the right arrangement can be discussed.

Before parts are approved
How we confirm a starter fault
CHECK 1
Battery under load
Working lights do not prove that the battery can supply starting current. Battery condition and voltage during the attempted start are assessed first.
CHECK 2
Power and ground paths
Voltage-drop checks help find resistance in cables and connections. A poor ground or supply connection can leave a healthy starter unable to crank correctly.
CHECK 3
Command and motor response
Confirm that the expected start request reaches the appropriate circuit. Compare supply, command and starter response before condemning the motor; mechanical resistance may also need investigation.
Tell us if the fault appears only after a hot drive or overnight parking. Reproducing an intermittent problem can take longer. One fault code or one successful restart is not a conclusive starter test.
Why two quotes may differ
Starter access changes the labor cost
01
Reaching the starter
Depending on the engine and vehicle layout, access can require removal of intake components, covers or other surrounding parts. We establish the actual route before quoting instead of applying one labor time to every BMW.
02
Refitting disturbed parts
Access work may require specified single-use fasteners or seals. Your estimate identifies required fitting items and explains the removal and refitting labor. Fragile connectors or pre-existing damage can change the scope.
03
Dealing with related damage
Burnt terminals, a damaged cable, contamination or ring-gear wear can require additional work. We explain the findings and obtain approval before adding repairs. A new starter does not correct those faults by itself.
How much workshop time should I allow?
Plan around 3–6 workshop hours for many straightforward conventional-starter jobs after approval and parts availability. Diagnosis, a hot-only fault, difficult fasteners or extra dismantling can extend the visit. Parts ordering and vehicle collection are separate from fitting time.
Compare the actual part
New starter, remanufactured unit or repair?
Genuine BMW or named supplier
Compare the exact part number, manufacturer and application. Genuine BMW parts and suitable alternatives are available on request. Your quote identifies the selected part and its condition before you approve it. A supplier brand alone does not prove that every unit matches the BMW-boxed specification.
Remanufactured or repaired starter
Ask whether the proposed unit is rebuilt, remanufactured or simply used. Confirm the work performed, testing, availability and any exchange-core condition. Suitability depends on the unit and vehicle; a cheaper part is not necessarily a lower complete bill.
Warranty before approval
Request the written parts and labor coverage for the specific option, including duration, mileage conditions and claim procedure. There is no universal warranty period for every starter, repair or supplier.

From assessment to collection
Your starter replacement in four steps
01
Confirm
Explain the findings and whether the fault is in the motor, supply or control circuit. Agree further testing if the cause remains uncertain.
02
Approve
Specify the part, access work, fitting materials, final total and expected timing. Obtain your approval before ordering or replacing parts.
03
Fit
Follow the vehicle-specific isolation and access procedure, install the matched unit, secure connections and restore removed components.
04
Recheck
Verify engagement, cranking and disengagement, review relevant electrical readings and repeat starting checks under suitable conditions.
For a reported hot-start fault, allow time to check the conditions in which it occurred. If other warnings or faults remain, we explain them separately. Road testing is used when relevant; it does not replace a proper starting-system check.
Three typical job estimates
Typical BMW starter repair estimates
Compare three typical repair estimates, including a starting diagnostic allowance. Each assumes a conventional starter, standard access and no additional damaged components. These are estimates, not completed customer repairs.
TYPICAL JOB ESTIMATE
320i with a click but no crank
2015 BMW 320i F30
Concern: Testing supports an internal starter fault after battery supply and connections are checked.
Proposed work: Matched conventional starter, standard access, fitting and restart verification.
Part and fitting: AED 1,250–1,600
Diagnostic allowance: AED 300
Estimated subtotal with diagnosis: AED 1,550–1,900
Timing: Around 3–4 workshop hours after approval.
TYPICAL JOB ESTIMATE
X5 with an intermittent hot-start fault
2016 BMW X5 F15
Concern: The fault is reproduced warm and the starter is confirmed faulty.
Proposed work: Matched starter, quoted access work, fitting and repeat warm-start checks.
Part and fitting: AED 1,600–1,950
Diagnostic allowance: AED 300
Estimated subtotal with diagnosis: AED 1,900–2,250
Timing: Around 4–6 hours; reproducing the fault may extend the visit.
TYPICAL JOB ESTIMATE
740Li with confirmed starter failure
2017 BMW 740Li G12
Concern: No crank with adequate supply and a valid start command; motor failure is confirmed.
Proposed work: Application-matched conventional starter, agreed removal and refitting, final electrical and starting checks.
Part and fitting: AED 1,900–2,300
Diagnostic allowance: AED 300
Estimated subtotal with diagnosis: AED 2,200–2,600
Timing: Around 5–6 hours, subject to actual access and parts availability.
The AED 300 allowance covers the starting diagnostic guide, not unlimited fault tracing. Extra seals, fasteners, wiring, recovery and prolonged diagnosis are excluded unless agreed. Your written quote confirms VAT and the final payable amount. These figures are not confirmed VAT-inclusive offers.
Fitment without guesswork
BMW engine and starting-system differences
Match more than the badge
- Engine and production date
- Mounting, drive and electrical specification
- Transmission and drivetrain where relevant
- Conventional starter or another starting system
E-, F- and G-generation BMWs
Vehicles within the same series can have different engines, starter positions and access requirements. A 3 Series or X5 name does not establish the correct unit. The VIN and fitted reference help resolve the application before parts are ordered.
Automatic stop-start applications
A replacement must suit the specified duty and vehicle system. Do not substitute a visually similar unit without application confirmation. An automatic stop-start feature being unavailable is not, by itself, proof of a failed starter.
48V, hybrid and electric systems
Some BMWs use starter-generator or hybrid starting arrangements that require a different assessment. Conventional-starter prices do not cover those systems. Fully electric BMWs do not use a combustion-engine starter motor. Tell us the model and warning so the correct service can be arranged.
Does a conventional starter require coding?
A conventional replacement starter motor is not normally registered like a new battery. Do not assume a coding charge is required merely because a starter is fitted. Any vehicle-specific initialization, control-system work or starter-generator procedure should be identified and explained in the quote.

Questions before booking
BMW starter replacement FAQs
How much does BMW starter replacement cost?
Selected conventional starter replacements are estimated at AED 1,250–2,450 for the part and fitting. Adding the starting AED 300 diagnostic allowance gives AED 1,550–2,750 before any additional work and final VAT confirmation. Engine, access and part choice determine your quote.
Does the price include diagnosis and VAT?
The price table separates part-and-fitting estimates from subtotals with a starting AED 300 diagnostic allowance. These are not confirmed VAT-inclusive offers. Your written quote identifies diagnosis, any diagnostic credit, fitting materials, additional work, VAT and the final payable amount before approval.
Does clicking mean I need a new starter?
Not necessarily. A weak battery, poor connection or control fault can also cause clicking or no crank. Dashboard lights may still work. We check the battery under load, power connections and starter response before recommending a replacement.
Can you repair the starter instead of replacing it?
We can assess whether a suitable repair route is available for your unit. Solenoid or internal wear may be repairable, but damage, parts availability and removal costs can make replacement more practical. Confirm the proposed repair provider, testing and warranty in the quote before choosing.
How long does starter replacement take?
Allow around 3–6 workshop hours for many straightforward conventional-starter replacements once work is approved and parts are available. Diagnosis, intermittent faults, difficult access and parts ordering can extend the visit. Confirm the expected collection time when booking.
What warranty comes with the starter?
Coverage depends on the chosen part and repair option. Before approval, request the written parts and workmanship terms, including time or mileage limits and the claim process. A genuine, alternative or remanufactured unit may have different coverage.
Can you collect a BMW that will not start?
Tell us your location and whether the vehicle rolls freely. Free routine Dubai pickup and drop-off are available for suitable scheduled visits, subject to access and availability. A non-running vehicle, basement access or locked wheels may require separately quoted recovery. Confirm arrangements before dispatch.
Does the replacement starter need coding?
A conventional starter is not normally registered like a new battery. A separate battery replacement, starter-generator or hybrid system may require different procedures. Any applicable initialization or control-system work is identified in the quote.
Can I keep driving if the starting problem is intermittent?
The car may leave you unable to restart. Arrange an assessment instead of relying on repeated attempts. Stop starting attempts if you hear grinding, smell burning, see smoke or the starter remains engaged. Call to discuss assistance if you are unsure.
What information do I need to book?
Start with your BMW model, year and what happens when you press Start. Add your location if you need collection and your preferred visit time. The VIN, warning photos and service history can be supplied later if needed.
