Whine or rumble
Note whether it changes with road speed, acceleration or lifting off the throttle. Differential gears and bearings are possibilities, but tires and wheel bearings can sound similar.
Oil near the axle
A leak may come from an output seal, input pinion seal, cover or another component above the unit. Trace its source and check the oil level before simply replacing a seal.
Clunk or turning shudder
Mounts, driveshaft joints, axle joints and xDrive components also need consideration. A clunk does not automatically mean damaged differential gears.
Stop safely for heavy grinding, severe vibration, binding, loss of drive or a substantial fresh oil leak. Continuing with inadequate lubrication can increase internal damage. Call before traveling and discuss suitable recovery. Follow dashboard instructions even if the noise seems minor.

What does a differential repair include?
Seal work
Identify the leaking point, inspect the sealing surface and relevant shaft play, fit the correct seal and restore the specified oil level. A damaged flange or excessive bearing movement can cause a new seal to leak again.
Bearing and gear setup
Internal repair needs more than installing a bearing. Where the unit is repairable, the work includes checking gear condition and setting the required bearing preload, gear clearance and tooth contact. These settings are specific to the assembly.
Approval before opening
If internal damage cannot be assessed in place, agree the removal and dismantling charge first. We explain what can be reused, what must be replaced and whether the revised repair remains sensible.

BMW compatibility and fluid selection
Rear-wheel drive and xDrive
An F30 3 Series or G30 5 Series can have a different final drive according to engine, transmission and drive type. Many longitudinal xDrive models have separate front and rear differentials, with different access and oil requirements.
Open, limited-slip and active units
An M badge or sport styling package does not identify every internal component. A mechanical limited-slip unit and an electronically controlled M differential can require different parts, fluids and checks.
Other BMW driveline layouts
Transverse-platform BMWs and electric drive units do not all follow the same separate front/rear arrangement. Send the model and year first; the VIN and fitted unit identify the correct service and repairability.
No universal oil or interval. Use the specification and maintenance guidance for the actual unit. A generic viscosity label, automatic additive treatment or blanket mileage interval is not a substitute for identifying the differential.

Can a differential oil change stop a whining noise?
Only when the cause is compatible with fluid service. Fresh oil will not rebuild a worn bearing or damaged ring-and-pinion gears. Noise should be localized and oil level checked before a maintenance service is sold as a repair.
How much does BMW differential repair cost?
Selected seal repairs are estimated at AED 650–950 and internal bearing work at AED 1,800–2,400. Rebuilds and complete units cost more. These figures include the described labor; confirm diagnosis, VAT and all related parts in the final written total.
Do front and rear differentials need replacement together?

Does differential replacement always need coding?
No. Conventional mechanical differentials do not all require coding. Electronically controlled units may need diagnostic checks or setup according to the vehicle procedure. We identify the fitted system before adding these operations to the quotation.
Can I drive with a small differential oil leak?
A photo cannot establish the remaining oil level or whether driving is safe. Arrange a prompt check. Heavy leakage, grinding, binding, severe vibration or loss of drive calls for stopping safely and discussing recovery.
How long does a repair take and what warranty applies?
A simple seal repair may fit one working day; internal bearing or rebuild work can take several days. Parts supply and hidden damage affect timing. Parts and labor warranty duration and exclusions are specific to the agreed repair and must be listed in writing.
Is the inspection free, and is diagnosis deducted from the repair?
